Product Description: This exquisite strand features nearly all uranium glass beads, a beautiful example of Bohemian glass craftsmanship from the Czech Republic. Known as Vaseline beads, these were produced about a century ago for export to African countries. True to their name, these beads have a translucent, glossy appearance reminiscent of Vaseline and are shaped like small abacus beads. This particular strand is a clear light green and fluoresces brilliantly under black light. A rare piece from a very limited production period, it offers a glimpse into the rich history of Bohemian glass. Note that the raffia is slightly frayed, so re-stringing is recommended if you plan to wear it as a necklace.

Trade beads were passionately loved by kings and nobles during the African slave trade era. Produced extensively in Venice and the Czech Republic (Bohemian glass), they were traded for slaves, gold, ivory, and other goods, reaching all corners of the world, including Africa. The methods of making these glass beads were kept highly secret, to the point where craftsmen were forbidden from leaving their workshops. Unlike beads made for European markets, these beads were tailored in various styles and designs to match the preferences of different tribes, creating a wide range of vibrant, large and small, patterned and plain beads.
