These exquisite Victorian scarab beetle earrings are set on 9ct gold wire hooks, with metal backs.
Both iridescent beetle shells have been beautifully preserved and retain their wonderful colours. The beetles weigh 1.52g and measures approximately 1.5cm x 1cm. One is ever so slightly smaller than the other - due to the natural sizes of each beetle.
Scarab Beetle jewellery had a revival both in the 1800s and then again during the Art Deco movement of the 1920s. The beetles were originally imported from Egypt and were used in jewellery as emblems of eternal life; the rolling of the dung ball that this beetle does as part of its mating ritual was thought to represent the circle of eternal life.
