Mashhad, holy city of northeastern Iran (Razavi Khorasan province), has been a court-weaving center since the early Safavid period — the Astan-i Quds Razavi shrine complex sustained continuous patronage of carpet ateliers from the 16th century through the 20th. Mashhad court weaving developed a distinct register: refined floral medallion derived from Tabriz-Kashan vocabulary but slightly cooler in palette and more restrained in border elaboration, reflecting the eastern Iranian taste for understatement compared to the western Iranian taste for declaration.

Distinct from the cohort's Navy Medallion Ardabil anchor. Same family of canonical Persian medallion vocabulary, geographically and chronologically distinct: Mashhad is later (post-1900), eastern (Khorasan rather than Tabriz/Ardabil), and more restrained.

Spot-clean with mild detergent; low-suction vacuum; professional clean every 18–24 months. Not a machine-washable rug.

• Wood: walnut, smoked oak, cerused white oak — cool-toned formal woods
• Upholstery: ivory bouclé, dusty-blue linen, mushroom velvet, soft-rose silk
• Metal: brushed nickel, antique silver, aged brass — the cooler palette tolerates both warm and cool metals
• Rooms: formal-restrained living rooms, primary bedrooms, libraries with mixed casegoods, formal dining rooms where the rug should support rather than dominate

Best for: rooms wanting canonical Persian vocabulary at a lower volume than the Ardabil reference — Mashhad is the cohort's understated Navy.
