This Federkiel belt from the traditional costume of the Transylvanian Saxons, dating to around 1880, originates from Transylvania and measures approximately 102 cm in length and 3.5 cm in width. It features colorful motifs with floral vines and tulips, typical of the region’s vibrant folk art tradition.

Crafted using the technique of Federkielstickerei (feather-quill embroidery), this belt showcases a rare and intricate form of leather decoration. In this method, the split quills of peacock tail feathers are used to embroider leather surfaces in elaborate patterns. Though more commonly associated with the Alpine regions of Austria and South Germany, this technique also found expression in Eastern European German communities, including the Siebenbürger Sachsen (Transylvanian Saxons).

Federkielstickerei was traditionally applied to belts, satchels, and leather accessories worn with festive or ceremonial attire. The craftsmanship required great skill and was considered a status symbol - a well-made belt could be worth as much as a horse at the time.

This particular belt is in very good condition, with only the fastening loop missing, which may have originally secured it at the waist. Its preservation and decorative detail make it a rare collector’s item, ideal for those interested in ethnographic textiles, German folk costume, or historic leatherwork.
