Edwardian, red spinel and diamond ring, circa 1900. Set to centre a vivid cushion-cut red spinel further set with two old-cut diamonds in a beautifully simple yellow gold setting. Spinels are extraordinary gemstones, for many years they have been associated, and even mistaken, for rubies. For example, at the time of their inception, many of the ‘rubies’ set into the Crown Jewels were in fact spinels! They come in a range of colours including cobalt-blue, pink, vivid orange, violet, lavender and red. The most valuable and desirable colour is deep blood red, originating from Burma. The spinel set in this ring is an exceptional example of a natural vivid blood red spinel with no indication of treatment of Burmese origin. A truly exceptional and original antique ring set with a very special gemstone. The ring is in wonderful condition and would make an original engagement ring.
