Tara (Caesalpinea spinoza) is a small thorny tree that grows wild in South America and North Africa. The fruit pods on the tara plant are rich pyrogallic acid as well as small amounts of catechin derivatives. Tara does not oxidize easily thanks to its low content of free gallic acid. It can be used as a mordant and it can also be used to make dyes using ferric salts.. It is often used for vegetable tanned leathers that need to be light-resistant.
